How to avoid a ChexSystems denial
If a bank turned you down for a checking account, ChexSystems is usually why. Here is what it tracks, how to check and clean up your record, and how to still open an account and earn a bonus.

You found a great checking bonus, applied, and got declined, even with fine credit. The usual culprit is not your credit score. It is ChexSystems, the reporting agency most banks use to screen deposit-account applicants. Here is how it works and how to get around a bad record.
What ChexSystems actually tracks
ChexSystems is a consumer reporting agency for bank accounts, not credit cards. Banks report and check things like:
- Accounts closed by the bank for cause, such as unpaid negative balances.
- Unpaid overdrafts, returned checks, or fees.
- Suspected fraud or excessive account applications.
A negative record can sit on your ChexSystems report for up to five years, and any bank that screens against it may decline you on that basis alone.
Check your report first
You are entitled to a free ChexSystems report, and it is worth pulling before you apply anywhere. Look for two things: legitimate negatives you need to resolve, and errors you can dispute. Accounts you paid off should show as settled, and anything inaccurate can be challenged directly with ChexSystems, which must investigate.
Clean up what you can
- Pay off what you owe. Settle any unpaid balances or fees with the bank that reported them, then confirm the record is updated.
- Dispute errors. If a negative is wrong or outdated, file a dispute with ChexSystems to have it corrected or removed.
- Slow down on applications. A burst of account openings can itself look like a risk. Space them out.
Open an account anyway
You do not have to wait five years. Two paths work:
- Banks and apps that do not screen against ChexSystems the same way. Many online banks and money apps approve applicants a traditional bank would decline. Options such as SoFi Checking and Savings and Capital One 360 Checking are worth checking, and we keep a running list of the current bonuses that are friendly to a rocky banking history at no-ChexSystems bonuses.
- Second-chance checking accounts. Some banks offer a dedicated "second chance" account designed for people with a ChexSystems mark. They carry more restrictions, but they let you rebuild a clean record.
The practical order
- Pull your ChexSystems report and read it.
- Pay off legitimate negatives and dispute any errors.
- Apply at a bank known to be lenient, using our no-ChexSystems list.
- Keep the account in good standing to rebuild your record over time.
A denial is a setback, not a dead end. This is reference information, not financial advice, and specific eligibility is always up to the bank.
