Betterment pays a $150 investing bonus or a three month APY boost, and which one you are offered is shown in your own Rewards Center rather than published. The cap is five sender rewards a calendar year, but a second and separate clock governs when you become eligible for further referral promotions at all, and the two are easy to read as one.

The cap, exactly

Betterment caps this at 5 per calendar year, per person. The limit follows you, not the card, so holding more than one eligible card does not multiply it. At the top of the published range that is $750 a calendar year.

Tax treatment

Betterment names no tax form. It states it treats the sender investing bonus as interest earned by the receiving account for tax reporting purposes. The tax falls on the person doing the referring, not the person referred. This is reference information, not tax advice.

  • Two different windows apply. Five sender rewards per calendar year is one. The other is that after filling five referrals you are not eligible for further referral promotions until the first day of the month beginning after 365 days from the end of your earliest active offer.
  • Betterment names no tax form. It treats the sender investing bonus as interest earned by the receiving account.
  • Betterment requires you to disclose that you are a client and are compensated if the new account is funded.
  • Betterment is a registered investment adviser and frames referrals as testimonial advertising, which is why the disclosure is not optional.
