New Betterment customers who sign up through a friend's referral link and deposit at least $100 into a new individual investing account within 30 days get a $150 bonus deposited about 30 days later. Depositing at least $10 into a new individual Cash Reserve account instead earns a 0.75% APY boost for 92 days.

How to get the Betterment Automated Investing bonus

  1. Sign up using the referral link or code from a friend.
  2. Open a new Betterment individual automated investing account.
  3. Deposit at least $100 into the new investing account within 30 days of signing up.
  4. Maintain a balance of at least $100 for about 30 days after the deposit.
  5. Receive the $150 bonus in the account roughly 30 days after the qualifying deposit.

The fine print that matters

  • A non-taxable early removal fee applies if you reduce the account balance below $250 within 3 years of receiving the bonus.
  • The early removal fee can be up to 80% of any single withdrawal and up to $150 total across the holding period.
  • Offer not available to Betterment Advisor Solutions clients or Premium service clients.
  • Deposits into self-directed investing, HSA, 401(k), joint/trust investing, cash reserve, or checking accounts do not qualify for this bonus.
  • A separate 0.75% APY boost on Cash Reserve for 92 days is available with a $10 deposit into a new individual Cash Reserve account, but joint and trust accounts are ineligible.
  • Referrer is capped at rewards for 5 referrals per calendar year.
  • The bonus is treated as interest for tax reporting purposes.
