Schwab pays the referring client nothing. Its refer a friend offer rewards only the person referred, on a tier scaled to their own deposit, which is the opposite of how nearly every roundup describes it. If you are a Schwab client deciding whether referring someone is worth your time, the honest answer is that there is no payment in it for you.

Charles Schwab publishes no cap for this program. That is not the same as there being none, so confirm on the terms page before you plan around it.

Tax treatment

Schwab states that for taxable accounts the bonus award will be reported on Form 1099-INT. It is the referred person's bonus, so it is their form. The tax falls on the person doing the referring, not the person referred. This is reference information, not tax advice.

When it pays

Net deposits are measured on the 45th day after enrollment, and the award credits about a week later.

The fine print that matters

  • Schwab publishes no reward for the referring client. This entry records a genuine zero, not a figure we could not find.
  • The referred person's award is tiered on their own net deposit: $100 at $25,000, $300 at $50,000, $500 at $100,000, and $1,000 at $500,000.
  • The offer is limited to one per account, with no more than one account enrolled per client.
  • Taxable accounts must hold the deposit for at least one year or Schwab may charge back the award.
  • Schwab's published terms do not address where a referral link may be shared.
